In the mid-70s Pattaya, was a very nice tourist spot in Thailand. The exotic beach, Rocks attacks, Mainly western tourists and there was an east-west mixed culture, adventure & freedom to do anything, specially Hippies come here for their enjoyment. But the series of Murder in 1975 changed the situation a little bit.
One day, a fisherman found a dead body of a young woman in the water, wearing a bikini. He informed the police but the Royal Thailand police didn’t identify the body because she was a foreigner. Forensic evidence showed that she took drugs and police thought it was a water accident.
Police searched all the hotels but found no foreigners missing. Two/Three days later they found another body of a dead woman who was wearing a bikini and also drugged & stabbed. Both are foreigners, wear bikinis and drown and also consume drugs.
The Royal Police of Thailand were confused because they had no evidence, no clue which could help them to investigate and the bodies were unidentified because they were foreigners. some days later villagers found two bodies of a foreign couple who were burning at the time they were found. and police found both took drugs.
Police found no passport, and no wallet found around their bodies.Thi. police did all things but the killer was still unidentified. After some days Police found another body of a dead woman in the Beach of Pattaya. She was drowned, stabbed brutally.
some days later about 1400 miles from Thailand, A country called Nepal where police found two bodies of a foreign couple dead outside in Katmandu.They were drugged Their faces were burnt so that they were unidentified to the police. Nepal police searched all the subsequent hotels where foreigners come and stay generally, in Freak Street one booking clerk said that two foreigners had not come for 4 or 5 days.
They are “Cornela Bronzich” & “Laurent Carriere” they were American. Police searched their room but no passport was found. police found a diary and a gasoline cylinder.
In the diary there was a name called “Alan Gotie” was found. Police asked their friend they told them they saw the couple with the man and they also identified the bodies of the dead couple. It was really “Cornela Bronzich” & “Laurent Carriere”.
The Nepal police conducted a thorough search across Kathmandu for “Alan Gotie.” Eventually, they apprehended a man named Carl Gassol. To confirm his identity, they consulted the murderer’s friend, but no one recognized him as “Alan Gotie.” Consequently, the police released Carl Gassol.It was a blunder the police did because the guy was actually “Chars Sobhraj” who did all the murders.
In the meantime, a woman said she saw a car near the dead bodies and she can remember the number plate of the car. Police matched the number and found that it was Carl Gassel’s car. They quickly ran to the hotel. But it was too late, Carl and his wife left the hotel and they were not found later on.
It was the notorious killer, Charles Sobhraj and Leclerc, (Charles’s girlfriend) who committed all the crimes with the help of a person called Ajay Chowdhury.
Charls committed his crime in various countries like Istambul,Pakisthan,Afganisthan,Greece,Italy,Iran,France, Malaysia, Thailand,Nepal, India & Hongkong. He is known as one of the most notorious criminals in world history. He has been charged for more than dozens of murders and multiple other crimes, like Identity theft, Burglary, Drug Trafficking, Jailbreaking and so on. Thus he is called “The Serpent” due to his deception and evasion.
His mode of operation is gaining the trust of the people with his impressive behaviour, like telling stories about world history, and politics and helping them in various matters. We are giving two examples, like in France, he helped two people to find their lost passport which was stolen by him and looted them later and in other cases he hospitalized one foreigner for diarrhoea and the man was so impressed, actually, he poisoned him and looted his all after sometimes later.
His Operations out mainly in Asia during the 1970s, from Istanbul to Hong Kong, especially Thailand in 1975, he targeted especially Western Hippies. He looted them, Murdered them brutally by giving them an overdose of drugs and also by stabbing or burning or strangling them. So that he is also known as “Bikini Killer” because most of the women found murdered, wore Bikini.
Actually, his target was to Rob people for money to gather false identity because he lived a very luxurious life without doing anything. He also collects the Passports of his victims so that he can escape other countries by using a fake passport.
In 1976, he was arrested and charged with murder in India. The Indian court convicted him and imprisoned him for 21 years. After being released from jail he went to France and continued his celebrity lifestyle. ??? but later he came to Nepal and was caught by police and sentenced to lifetime imprisonment. Because of the murder of “Cornela Bronzich” & “Laurent Carriere”
History of the Serpent
Charles Sobhraj was born in Vietnam on 6th April 1944. His full name is Hatchand Bhaonani Gurumukh Charles Sobhraj His Mother was Tran Loang Phun was a Vietnami & father was Sobhraj Hatchand Bhaonani, an Indian but when he was born his father and mother were still unmarried so we can say Sobhraj was an Illegal child of them and when he was a child, his parents were separated and his father left the family.
After some days his mother married a French army person called. At that time Vietnam was very disturbed, where French colonial troops were fighting against Vietnam communist rebels. Young Sobhraj witnessed countless acts of violence before his stepfather finally took the family to France in 1953.
When he was only 4 years, in France,sobhraj suffered a lot of negligence in the family. His mother and father neglect him due to other children of them. Not only that,he was admitted to a Catholic Boarding school in Paris.
While there he soon became the haunt of racial torture and insults. No values in-home, cruel behaviour of their friends made him frustrated, cruel, arrogant, and ruthless and day by day he started crimes like burglary and received his first jail sentence in 1963 in France.
In the prison, he met a man called Felix d’Escogne, a volunteer in that prison. After getting free from prison, Sobhraj went to d’Escogne and engaged himself by meeting the high society of France and also the big brothers of the criminal world.
One major quality of Sovraj is, his knowledge of different subjects like law, world history, and world politics because of his reading habits, He became very respected among the people around him. But his target was to be rich so he committed crimes like Burglaries, Theft and passport hacking, by which he could escape from the country to another country.
During this time he met and began a passionate relationship with Chantal Compagnon, a young Parisian woman of a very wealthy family. She didn’t know about what Sobhraj was actually doing. Sobhraj proposed to her and she agreed to marry Sobhraj.
On the marriage day, Sobhraj was arrested for stealing a vehicle. He was punished and sentenced to eight months in prison, but Chantal was a devoted lover and waited until Sobhraj was released from jail and married Sobhaj later on.
Journey towards Hell
After marriage the spouse left France and travelled through Eastern Europe with fake documents, robbing tourists whom they befriended in their way, at last they arrived in Mumbai(India) where Chantal gave birth to a baby girl, Usha, it was 1970.
But Sobhraj resumed his criminal lifestyle like car theft & smuggling operations because he needs money for his gambling addiction. He became infamous in the gambling scene of the city. In 1973, In India, he attempted a robbery at a jewellery store in Hotel Ashoka but was unsuccessful and was arrested and imprisoned.
But Sobhraj was a serpent he escaped the jail by faking Faking illness, he escaped with Chantal’s help,sobhraj told Chantal to play cards with the cops and he left out of that area but both were captured shortly. After borrowing money from his father who lived in Saigon(Vietnam) to bail them out, , the couple fled to Afghanistan.
His prime quality was he could speak multiple languages(at least eight languages) nice intelligent sophisticated behaviour and have vivid knowledge of multiple subjects as discussed earlier, so he could mix up himself in any community.
In Kabul (Afghanistan) the couple has begun to rob tourists on the Hippie Trail, Sobhraj then fled to Iran, leaving his family behind. Chanthal went to France with his daughter leaving Sobhraj alone and never returned to sobhraj’s life.
Sobhraj spent the next two years on the run by using stolen passports from various countries in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
He went to Pakistan and did his first Murder, the victim was a Pakistani driver named Habib, In September 1972, in the way, Charles drugged Habib took his life and threw his body in the river.
After that he went to Istanbul, teaming up with his brother Andre to drug and rob wealthy tourists in both Turkey and Greece but was caught by Athence police “The Serpent” managed to escape,(by identity hoax). Police thought they were keeping Sobhraj but it was Andre who was kept behind the bar for 18 years.
It is 1974-75 sobhraj ran Hong-kong between Thailand and Nepal and sometimes in India, in Hong-kong he Murdered a woman called “Stephen Perry” and came to Thailand.
In Thailand, Sobhraj introduced himself as either a Gem salesman, a drug dealer to impress and befriend foreigners specially Hippies. Actually, his target was Rob Hippies, he gained their faith by telling various types of stories like world history, about the place, and their culture so that they were so impressed.
In Thailand, Sobhraj met Marie-Andrée Leclerc from Canada, Sobhraj made her his girlfriend, and she quickly became his most devoted partner, turning a blind eye to his crimes and helping him with most of the crimes. In an interview, Leclerc said, “I loved him very much and day by day I became his slave”.
After committing various crimes with the assistance of Leclerc, Sobhraj encountered another Indian man, Ajay Chowdhury, a natural-born criminal who became Sobhraj’s right-hand man. The trio engaged in numerous offenses, including murder, burglary, drug abuse, and passport forgery, particularly in Thailand, India, Malaysia, Nepal, and Greece.
It was 1975 Sobhraj and Leclerc & Chowdhury committed 7/8 murders. Six/Seven in Thailand and two in Nepal which was earlier discussed. The first woman which a fisherman found dead in Thailand, was “Terasa Knowlton” from Seattle, USA, after that he killed “Jenne Boliver”, USA, & then “Vital Hakim(Sephardic Jew)”,”Bintanja(Dutch) “& his fiancée “Cornelia Hemker(Dutch)”.The last one murdered in Pattaya was “Charmayne Carrou” who had a wound in the chest and neck, looking like were stabbed or struggled.
In Nepal, they murdered one couple it was “Laurent Carrie”(Canada) and Connie Bronzich(California)”, on December 16, 1975. After that Sobhraj came to Calcutta/Baranasi(India) and brutally murdered an Israeli student “Allan Jacob” and then came to Delhi where he Struggled “Jean Luc-Solomon(France)”
After that, he made a vital mistake. In 1976 a Group of French post-graduate Students visiting India were approached by Sobhraj, who offered his services as a tour guide. They accepted his proposal, impressed by his fluency in French and his intriguing demeanour.
But Sobhraj planned to loot them so he drugged them by giving them poisoned pills, he told them it was an anti-dysentery medicine. But it was a miscalculation, overdose of drugs affects more than 60 students.
The students began to fall unconscious. Some of the students realized that it was Sobhraj who had done it and contacted the police, police arrested him on 19th July 1976. Sobhraj was charged with the murder of Solomon and other crimes like Burglary, and poisoning and was sent to Tihar prison, Delhi(India).
The Court convicted him of a 12-year jail sentence for murder, burglary, and poisoning but some years later the serpent break the jail by dragging the guard (Tihar jail, Delhi) and was soon recaptured and spent another 9 years in jail.
But it was a planned jailbreak because he knew, after 12 years, the Indian Govt. will release him and transfer him to Thailand police where the death penalty was waiting for him, so he escaped the Jail intentionally and was captured by police and took another nine years imprisonment. Because he knew after 20 years ,any crime is invalid in Thailand.
He was released in 1997 and went to France and demanded 15 million for his Biography & Movie rights. But for unknown reasons, he came back to Nepal In 2003 and was recognized in the streets of Kathmandu by a journalist who informed the police authorities. He was arrested on 19 September 2003 in the Yak and Yeti hotel’s casino.
He was charged with the murders of Bronzich and Carrière, Sobhraj got a life sentence In 2004. During his jail period, he married a 22 year girl called Nihita Biswas. Who later took part in BIGBOSS.
In 2017 Sobhraj was suffering from critical heart disease in jail and was operated in Nepal on that year. (The cost was carried by the French Govt!!!!!!!). It is interesting, Sobhraj told Dr.Kairala who operated sobhraj that “You will be famous when people know that you operated Charles Sobhraj”.
Conclusion
It is quite astonishing that Charles Sobhraj, despite having brutally murdered numerous people without any significant motive, has gained worldwide notoriety. His moniker, “Bikini Killer,” has contributed significantly to his infamy.
People feel thrilled, romantic & also feared about the activity of the person, not only that, a Criminal who can speak multiple languages, has vast knowledge of world history, politics, and law with sophisticated behaviour makes him different from other criminals.
It can be assumed that if he got love, guidance, affection and proper education in his childhood hopefully, he would not have been a Brutal killer and could become a renowned Scientist, Doctor, Engineer and so on and might not have spent in jail for 38 years.
Note: Charles was released from jail on 23 December 2022,@ the age of 78, on account of his age and good behaviour. Now he is in France and living a normal life(Hope).
